Unpacking
Carefully unpack all items from the carton(s). Do not discard or destroy the packing material until the equipment has been inspected, assembled, and all parts are accounted for.
After unpacking, all parts should be examined for any damage, which may have been caused by rough handling during shipment. If any damage is detected, contact the delivering carrier at once. Claim for damage should be made to the delivering carrier before destroying packing cartons.
Setup
To set up the unit, first mount and secure it on a suitable stand. The StudioMax III stand adapter allows the unit to be mounted on a stand with a 3/8” to 5/8” post. Place the stand adapter onto the post, and secure it with the thumb screw provided. Be sure to use a stand that is stable and will not tip easily
NOTE: When handling flash tubes and modeling lamps always use a clean cloth or glove to keep skin oils from the glass, and to protect your hands from glass breakage or heat.
The unit may be shipped with the modeling lamp and flashtube not installed. Using a clean cloth or glove, insert the base of the modeling lamp all the way into the spring loaded center socket on the front of the light, and twist to the right to secure. Also use a clean cloth or glove when installing the three-pronged flash tube. Align the prongs with the three sockets on the front of the light. The prongs will fit in the sockets only one way. Push the flash tube until the prongs are firmly seated in the sockets. This will prevent arcing and failure of the socket contacts during operation.
If flashtube and modeling lamp are installed when received, there will be packing between the tube and lamp to prevent damage during shipping. REMOVE THE PACKING.
On a hard surface, place the 7-1/2" reflector on its side with the oval knockout in the reflector facing down. Use a screwdriver or other metal tool to push the oval knockout out of the side of the reflector. This oval opening allows an umbrella shaft to pass through the reflector and be connected to the umbrella holder on the bottom of the monolight.
The reflector is attached by the “quick-change” mechanism. A solid tab and a thumb screw on the unit grip the ring of the reflector. To mount the reflector, loosen the thumbscrew so it does not show inside the circle and tilt the reflector ring past the stationary top-tab, then past the thumbscrew. Tighten the thumbscrew, securing the reflector. All accessory reflectors and soft boxes are designed for use with this “quick-change” system or onto this 7-½ inch reflector.
Connecting to AC power
Be certain the power switch is OFF. Attach the AC line cord to the power-input connector, located on the bottom of the StudioMax III, and then plug the other end of the cord to a grounded wall outlet. Turn the power switch ON. The READY light will light only when the unit has charged to the selected setting.
